Watch and see how United Way of Massachusetts Bay opened doors for Samilla and her son.
The United Way of Massachusetts Bay unites people to create positive, lasting change in the lives of people in need. This mission is brought to life by focusing on what United Way has deemed the three core building blocks of a strong, vibrant community:
- Ensuring that all families have the resources and opportunities to lift themselves out of poverty
- Preparing children to enter school ready to learn and succeed
- Inspiring and supporting youth to stay in school and realize positive options for the future
Each year John Hancock employees raise valuable funds for United Way programming during a three-week campaign. This year’s campaign, Hear the Change, Be the Change, highlights the personal stories of three people whose lives have been positively impacted by the United Way mission.
Samilla Quiroa discovered United Way when a neighbor suggested her young son be screened for developmental delays by Thrive in 5. Thrive in 5 is a joint initiative between the City of Boston and United Way of Massachusetts Bay, created to ensure universal school readiness for all of Boston’s children. After seeing the value Thrive in 5 brought her son, Samilla became a volunteer parent screener with the Family Nurturing Center. As someone fluent in both Portuguese and Spanish, she fills a critical role in connecting with non-English speaking families and is of immense value to the program.
